Dr. Sanjit Mitra is an active member of the team that detected gravitational waves. He has been involved in this effort for more than ten years. He completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Physics from University of Calcutta and did his Ph.D. in Gravitational Waves and Cosmology from the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune. He then pursued his post-doctoral research in the Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology and University of California Santa Barbara. He has played important roles in the two great projects in Astronomy of recent times, the Laser Interferometric Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) and the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background mission. He currently works as an Associate Professor at IUCAA.

His talk will give us an insight into the unexplored applications of gravitational waves – ideas we probably weren’t even aware of!
